Table of HIV prevalence in
sub-Sahara Africa
This table lists the countries in sub-Sahara Africa in decreasing order
according to the HIV prevalence rates in these countries (UNAIDS,
2001). As seen from the table, nine of the top ten countries with the
highest prevalence have subtype C either as the major subtype
circulating in the country or as one of the subtypes (Kenya). Of these
top ten countries, it is interesting to note that eight (8) are from
Southern Africa where subtype C is most prevalent. This suggests that
subtype C has contributed to the high prevalence of HIV in these
countries (see map on subtype C
infection). The major subtypes circulating in any one country are
indicated with bold type.

The subtypes in small lettering indicate that even
though these subtypes were identified in the respective countries, they
represent only a small fraction of the circulating subtypes.
